no reason you can not use it
dx200 as well or any other synth in line with the AN1x

even software synths ...

the an200 here has taken a back seat to fm7 and fm8 but
it still does the job for a few layers when needed

I think it was Yamaha's start idea, the AN 200 could be seen in a sense as
an "AN1x expander", adding some more voices and a rythm track. And unless
you only play back MIDI files you need at least one keyboard . The AN1x one
is not the worst i've seen on a synthesizer...
First AN1x MIDI out -> AN200 MIDI in : you cannot go wrong.
Then check your MIDI implementation charts for both machines and /or use a
"MIDI filter" to cancel unwanted incoming messages (program change or
control). In "local OFF" mode your AN1x performs like a master keyboard
without any sound engine inside : you can play the AN200 only. On another
hand in this mode the sound engine of the AN1x can be controlled only by
some incoming external MIDI data, assuming they are on the same MIDI
channel.

Try it ! MIDI is purely digital, if one synth "crashes" do what you do with
your computer : turn it OFF and ON again. There is no risk for the hardware.
