Re: [AN1x] An1x Live

2006-05-09 by Jeff

Hi !
i don't play keyboards live , but i've some experience in P.A.
If you use a compressor , you'll kill all the dynamic of the keyboard .
If you want to try it for free , cut off the velocity on your synth ,
crank up the volume pot and play ...
I think that your problem could be that your band mates play too loud ,
or have more powerful amps than yours . Maybe your amp (depending on how
you tweak the "tone" pots) lacks of low frequency response , or your
speakers ? The keyboards frequency range is much wider than a guitar or
a bass , so you must use wide band speakers ....and good ones : it can
get lower than the low E of a bass guitar and higher than a screaming
lead part on the guitar .
Another important point is the "yield" or "sensitivity" of your
speakers . It is a value in dB for 1 watt : i think this is self
explanatory , 1W of electrical power applied to the speaker coil gives X
dB of sound level . But remember that dB are logarithmic units ! 95dB/W
seems to be a minimum value , unless you can supply a huge power with
your amp .
Low frequency , with a good quality and a good sensitivity bass speakers
can be very expensive ... but low frequencies (under 200 or 300 Hz) are
not "directive" , so you can add a powered bass cabinet to your set up
to enhance the lower frequencies .

>i have a few questions for those of you that play live and use an AN1x...my current set up is an an1x, an akai ax60, a yamaha a4000 and a couple of cd players... (sometimes my ms2000r, but i hate carrying the rack so i often leave it behind)
>my band tends to be loud. we dont have a bass player so both guitarists use a/b switchs to turn on bass cabs for certain parts....further more we are drop "C" tuned..it makes for a bit of a thick/noisey sound.....anyways, right now im just runningt hru a 6 channel berhinger mixer into a carvin keyboard head into two pa speakers. understanably, this is producing a great sound, but it kinda works for now. i find myself playing higher notes just to hear myself sometimes and when im playing lower, i just kinda hope it fits.....although im not really doing anything "lead" like, more atmospheres, loops, noise, and occaisionaly notes of some sort...
>so...
>any suggestions from those of you that do play live? something to maybe make the most of the range of frequencies...ive though of tube preamps to maybe get some warmth....then i thought maybe a guitar or bass head? or should i go the PA route? any ideas appreciated? also, any suggestions on different patch volume issues when playing live? ive thought about getting a compressor to try and control it, but a friend said that would be a bad idea as it would compromise any sort of programmed dynamics, etc.......
