Composing with the Buchla 200e

Composing with the Buchla 200e

2012-03-07 by Jeshua Whitaker

Hi, I am a student learning synthesis at college and I want one of my final projects to be a complete composition on our Buchla 200e. I wanted to know from other Buchla users how they approached this beastly instrument to do their biddings. From my experience with the system, doing tonal music can be quite a challenge, do you guys abandon the thought of tuning it precisely to reference pitches?

Thanks!

It does equal tempered notes just fine over MIDI.

Our MIDI module is out of comission at the moment, and I was told that it wont be replaced until April.

What do you have to control it with?

The main control modules on our system include the 222e, 250e, and the 266e. It's an 18 rack that is very similar to Buchla's system #5 on this page.

I haven't decided my route of attack yet. I like the idea of building a giant patch and performing live, but I feel that it might be smarter to break down my sounds into small bits and load them into samplers within my DAW.

You can set 222e and 250e to play notes according to the tempered
chromatic scale much like you would do on any analog modular
synthesizer. Set up a couple of parallel independent patches that you
can control separately instead of one big patch. Add some reverb and
or delay. I usually set a reverb on outputs C and D and mix A+C as
left and B+D as right in a mixer. That way I can control reverb mix
directly for each 227 channel in the buchla (with cv) by panning
up/down.
