analog textures: a buchla piece

analog textures: a buchla piece

2011-09-23 by Todd Barton

Dear Friends,

I’m eager to share my new electronic music piece which I
consider my first true composition for the Buchla system.

After years of exploring and experimenting with the Buchla
200e Electric Music Box, I have now sculpted a little piece that pays homage to
the depth, insight, intuition and imagination of its master-builder: Don
Buchla. This is my brief magnum
opus to Don’s constellation of expressively and musically designed modules. All sounds were created on a
12-module Buchla system. Some
sounds where processed on the fly inside Ableton Live 8 using its stock delays
and reverbs along with some chorusing from Sound Toys’ Crystallizer. If you’ve got 8’30” to spare sit
back with some good studio monitors or headsets and enjoy! All best wishes, Todd

Wow Todd,
This work is so incredibly wonderful!. Of course, so is your other work. But certainly I can understand your pride with this one! What was your compositional process?

Hi Don,

Thanks so much for listening and for your kind comments. The compositional process involved creating a new patch each day and take it through a bunch of variations while recording it in Ableton Live. Each day I approached a different texture. Then folllowed days of gleaning and editing specific timbre, phrases and phases. Then, yesterday I spent the entire day "composing", i.e putting together, the entire piece in Logic Express. I've had a piece of this magnitude in my mind for quite some time, having a few weeks to devote to it really helped let it unfold. Thanks for asking :-)

all best wishes,

Hi Adam,

Many thanks, I'm glad you like. Also, thanks for the kind comments on
soundcloud and muff's. BTW, we should maybe think of doing a Pacific
Northwest Buchla compilation album -- it seems there a bunch of us in
Oregon and Washington!

all best wishes,
Todd

Todd - that was fantastic, thanks so much for sharing it. I hope B&A do another compilation of works by users, this deserves to be on prominent display. You should be very proud to have concocted that.

Best,
Rash
