I think there may be a misconception about 261e being an improvement or "better" than 259e, lacking aliasing etc. In my opinion (i have one of each) they are complementing each other in a number of ways, soundwise as well as functional. Take a good look and compare mod osc on both, look at the waveshaping controls of the principal oscs. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the 259e, it's a wonderful vco. At low warp settings the wavetables are smooth and nice and do not alias much. The warp function is like a fish-eye looking glass on the sound. And as the pitch is rised it really does alias spectacularly on some waveforms, but this can be used too. To continue the paralell it's like magnifying to the point where you lose perspective, where canvas becomes threads. The 261e looks like a continuation of the classic 259, however sonically they are different. The 261e waveshaper is a look-alike but its sound is bolder i would say. And it does not in any way replace the 259e soundwise. They are quite different. The 261e waveshaping controls also works on other sonic dimensions compared to the 259e. But common to both is that with just one module you have an enormous wealth of sonic material at your fingertips AND you have the means to control it with voltage. Buchla vcos 258, 259, 259e and 261e essentially reduces the need of filters and complex timbre patching: The sound is right there at the source. I think the best way to demo the 200e is using it in music, not isolating it to single modules because it would not be possible to make a full demo of the 259e capabilities in a short mp3. You can only do like Jim Aikin, show specific characteristics. These impressions will be filtered through your preconception of the synth and, i think, will give you the wrong picture. Generally i find Don Buchlas instruments inherently musical, the path to new sounds is always short. Every function is carefully chosen, and using them is opening doors. Agreed. I only own 259e's at this time, and while I agree about the vast sonic capabilities of them, I frequently find the aliasing too intrusive for my own, personal musical needs. The only device close to being able to do what the 259e does is the Serge Wave Multiplier, so I suspect the 261e's sound will be similar to this baby. The 291e filter is incredible. I have never gotten this kind of vocal formants from any other resonator (MOTM, Doepfer or ASys). I still would love to hear some 261e mp3's, though........... ;-)
