Well, to use a term from NLP, the CS80 sound is firmly "anchored" with
Vangelis, full stop. You can do whatever you want, you will automatically
end up producing a sound reminiscent of Vangelis because he really used the
CS80 like no other. Very much like using a Mellotron and ∗not∗ sounding
quite like King Crimson, Moody Blues, Genesis, or Tangerine Dream. I would
never ever associate the CS80 with people like Stevie Wonder, Herbie
Hancock, Mike Oldfield, or Kate Bush because they never explored the sonic
potential of this instrument, to them it was just another polyphonic
synthesizer which happened to be more expressive than, say, a Prophet 5 or
Oberheim OB-X, let alone a Polymoog.
It´s one thing to use the sound, it´s another thing to play your own music
with it.
It doesn´t have to be a Lexicon 224XL, btw. Any decent digital reverb which
doesn´t produce a tinny type of sound but reasonably thick reverb washes can
be used for that. EMT 246 works great, so does a Klark Teknik DN 780, and
there are plenty of lower-market devices that also sound great (unless
you´re using a Behringer Virtualizer). I would stay away from those early
digital reverbs. Like my tech put it, they are "ticking timebombs"...
Stephen.
