Subject: Re: [yamahacs80] Re: CS-50/CS-60 CV mods possible?

In my opinion this is not the best idea. There aren't too many of these machines out there, they are easy to break, and as others have said the voice control system isn't all that straight forward, and linear.

In fact there are less CS-50s and CS-60s out there than 80's from what I know. Its kind of one of those 'if you have to ask it isn't a good idea' scenarios. Just my 2c, and not just as a historical purist, they just don't really lend themselves to modification

Hi. So I've contacted my local synth tech and he said he'd look into doing it for me but asked if I had any links for what to do. Does anyone have any links or schematics for adding CV for pitch? Cheers.

So is it doable? Has anyone done it before?

Hi Florian,

Thanks for the reply. I use Expert Sleepers Silent Way to control my Hz/V synths. It is capable of producing up to 6 CVs for polyphony. I currently use it to control my MS20 and CS15. It converts MIDI messages into CV via my DC coupled audio interface (modified Presonus Firepod). There is also a dedicated euro rack module available for it.

Adding voltage inputs for each voice to a polyphonic CS is not a big
technical problem.

But the real question is: what will be the source that will control this
modified Synth?
The CS-Series is V/Hz not V/Oct. So you'd need an external
voltage-source, which produces a V/Hz characteristics. Beside Yamahas
own monophonic CS-Synths and Korgs MS10, MS20, and SQ10 I wouldn't know
any keyboard, that is suitable.

Some polyphonic MIDI interfaces like the big Kenton, Doepfer MCV24 or
the EES CV7 can produce V/Hz voltages - but in this case you will be in
the range of a $500-device (minimum).

So: an integrated MIDI-interface makes most sense.
