Good luck Martin! Yep - getting to stuff behind the card cage is a pain. First thing I'd do it remove the top by unscrewing the hinges (which is also hard to get at!). There's enough slack in the cables so you can stand the top panel on its side next to the keyboard. Lift up the card rack and unscrew the key-bed frame. The hinges that let you tilt up the key-bed can be slipped out by angling the assembly and then you can slide the whole thing forward a bit - not too far with all the wires coming off at both sides. That should let you get in and remove the cover over the switch.
I had to replace one of these a couple of years ago that was destroyed. I couldn't find a slide switch that was the same size and ended up using a DPDT toggle switch instead. Let us know if you find a replacement - assuming you need one.
