Sounds like a good project. Just keep all the good-looking parts for one of
them and you should still have an ugly but fully-functional one to sell.
I've never seen one of the old production KLM-366s, but I don't see anything
on the schematics that would cause a problem changing out the control panel
assemblies.
You will definitely need to clean the key contacts on both of them.
Replacing the keys themselves will not fix anything, except maybe the
"sticky" ones which should be removed and cleaned to see what is sticking.
On the newer boards, you can fix the tuning problem by twiddling the "TUNE
MID" trimmer (VR15). I've having trouble finding an equivalent control on
the older schematic. Maybe somebody else has seen one of these?

PolySix@yahoogroups.comSubject: [PolySix] Two Polysixes
Hi,
I purchsed a polysix several months ago. Its the old production version with
KLM-366 and the additional KLM-396a board on top of it. The battery had
leaked but the previous owner repaired the traces and replaced the battery
with a lithium with an easily swappable battery holder. Several of the keys
are sticky and a couple are semi-dead (I kind of have to wiggle them
sideways in order to get them to sound) and several are clicky (low felt
probably). The top assembly is in great condition. There was a mod done to
it that bypasses the effects unit (an additional out at full volume coming
from the TPI sig out on the KLM-366 board with an in-line fuse).
I just picked up another polysix -- my plan was to grab the good componenets
off of the newer one to mint up my older one. The newer poly six is the
newer production version with the KLM-366s (no KLM-396a board on top of it).
The battery was replaced in time; however, the new battery is soldered on
and not as easily replaceable. The top assembly is in worse condition
(pretty banged up and a couple rust patches, thick felt-tip ink markings on
tune pot); however, the keys are in much better shape than my old one. There
are a couple of semi-dead keys on this newer one as well (albeit different
keys).
Which should I keep? The newer produciton model or the older one. Sonically
they are exactly the same. The newer one is closer in key -- the older one
needs to be flatted at the 9 o'clock position of the master tune to bring it
into key. I'm leaning to wards replacing the top assemply with all the pots
from the older nicer condition one into the newer model and then just
replacing the couple of semi-dead keys (could be contacts though). Is there
any issues with the top assemblys from the different production runs aside
from that extra out mod that was done on my older model?
I plan on getting a midi-retrofit for the one I decide to keep.
