Most folks would not say that solid state was 'mellower' (esp. thosehigh school shop class pre-amps on the Chamberlins)-- how so?

I don't think they thought about it as they wouldn't have beenaware of what had gone on to create the recordings. They would haveaccepted what was provided with no thought to what could have been. Ilisten to CDs and vinyl in complete ignorance of what was originallyrecorded.
