Yes, that's the one. It's called 'high tines' in the DX library. I remember that because I used it too, but became sick of it when I heard it everywhere.
 
I agree it can be the right sound 'sparingly', but it was overused. I really hated hearing it all the time and it just made a lot of songs appear really contrived to me. Then the Roland D-50 had their own version of that too.
 
But I guess I can thank that overused sound in a lot of bad, vapid and vacuous music for driving me to get a real Rhodes, Hammond, Mellotron etc.

Do you mean the DX trying to be a Rhodes piano "tine" sound? The DX7 e-piano sound is more like a bell than a tine. There were a lot of shitty songs that had that DX bell sound, but they would be shitty songs no matter what sound was used. I think that the DX bell sound can be just the right sound. (Used nicely on several Peter Gabriel recordings)
