I always had issues with the drumsolo on a kitchen table part.

Close to the edge always felt so great because it was musically efficient, logical and to the point...and then they gave us topographic oceans.

As a drummer I have always had problems with Alan White in comparison to Bill Bruford.

Topographic Oceans is a demanding listen. I could never really get into it 100% until recently. Now I appreciate it so much more.
 
I had to listen to each piece of music at different times though. If I do that then I always enjoy it, but the whole thing all at once sometimes is a bit much, and the subtleties can easily get lost.
 
It really depends on what mood you're in I think.

  The Topographic stage setup was also noted in the book.  Moving parts, very complex.  I believe they devoted nearly all of the tour to playing "Topographic" at the time, which would've been tough on the audiences.  I saw the following Relayer tour (with Moraz).  It had a similar stage, but the only "Topographic" piece played was "Ritual".
   I liked "Topographic" on record.  Long, sweeping aural vistas, the stuff of headphones.  The only thing that bugged me was the compressed nature of the mix.
   Roger Dean and Yes are forever stuck with each other.
