From what I understand David Kean purchased the Mellotron trademark. Just like Lenovo (a Chinese company) purchased the IBM trademark to stick on computers made by Lenovo, the computers have nothing to do with IBM.  This is a side effect how business is evolving in the US.

I was offered the Danelectro trademark at a shuttered music store in Vineland NJ. I bought a lot of guitar parts that day but left behind the rest. It didn't seem proper.  I only would have bought it to present to original people's family. That behavior would have you expelled from the Wharton School.

"Mellotron" is trademarked by Dave Kean... so I know that you can't use that name unless you have permission.

It would appear no-one ever told me.  :-)
