There's an ad in keyboard magazine (I have it buried somewhere) offering the SMS2 upgrades in 1976 or 77.
 
It's called "Trade In Yor Mellotron", but it was put in by Sound Sales, so this only answers things for the American side, not the British side.
 
I believe the Brits may have done it earlier with the release of the MK V.
