Sometimes, all the equipment can get in the way of the music, I often find I have spent more time fiddling with hardware or software than playing, so it's good just to sit at the piano or if I want a different sound my Korg K61p which has 24 voices and 2 effects and that's it.
I think some of the 50's recordings sound more alive than later popular music, presumably because it was pretty much recorded live with very little messing about.
Although I still enjoy listening to progressive rock I sometimes think it's "overcooked" and can have a rather dead quality to it.
