Ahhhh, yes! couldn't agree more, Mark. The Beatles got me into music; "Strawberry Fields" introduced the world to the Mellotron, and got me intrigued, tho' for the longest time there were a million inaccurate descriptions of what they were; but then THAT album, "In the Court of the Crimson King" - that album made me aware to the depths of my soul... I NEEEEEED a Mellotron!!!! Finally got one around 1977, M-400 #1485, and it turned my musical life around! (Still have it, too!) Funny, just tonight I was at a band rehearsal for our L.A.-based Beatles tribute band, BEATUNES, and our bassist was talking about one of the later K.C. records with Adrian Belew. He couldn't recall the title, but thought it was fantastic. I chimed in about K.C. #s 1 & 2 (remember "In The Wake of Poseidon?"), feeling that, as you just wrote, those first couple of albums were truly groundbreaking and historic. As a guitarist, I still long to master the wild, ultra-high-speed upward guitar/bass/sax riff in the middle break. Astounding playing on all counts. And yes, I agree that Mike Giles was an amazing drummer - the best for them, Greg Lake had by far the best voice for 'em, and the amazing Ian McDonald... well, 'nuff said. They never fully replaced him and his virtuosity on all he played. And of course, Fripp... quite phenomenal, of course! (I understand, with all respect, there are aspects of him equally phenomenal in other, less positive directions, but that';s beside the point here.) Thanks for bringing up K.C., Mark. They definitely stand the test of time! Cheers to all, and late Happy Thanksgiving! ~ Berington Berington Van Campen Van Campen Productions / V.C.MusiCorp / BEATUNES VCMusiCorp1@yahoo.com (626) 458-4474 Home/Office |
