While waiting for Martin's reply, I'm going to guess... I think that it was because white was cheap and easy to get. Also, white was easy to match.

  This discussion thread gets me to wondering:  Why did Streetly finish the original 400s in white in the first place?  Was it simply to make them stand out from the other instruments on a stage?  Any thoughts, Martin?
