Maybe but UNIX sure is open source.
And it's windows emulation is good.
With all these computers, I've been thinking about migrating to it on at least a couple of them.
I know of systems that haven't been restarted in 2 years, including hardware upgrates!

I have 2 degrees in computers and a lot more hours than I need for a Ph.D.
Been in this field since 1977 when a fast modem was 75 BAUD.

Professionally speaking, Photoshop is the only way to go. Yes, it is a huge program and seems very confusing, but if you have it already, I would suggest learning how to do the things you want to do with it. Just because it's a huge program that does basically anything you could possibly want it to do, doesn't mean that you have to know everything about it.

So if you do have it, you might want to check out the tutorials at lynda.com. They are really terrific and the site has tutorials that cover just about any software you might want to use. Everything is clear and concise and you could learn that bit you need to know about Photoshop, quickly and easily.

Two or three of my "hobbyist" friends say Photoshop Elements is quite good and with a free trial, you could check it out before laying down your cash.
