Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: What's after supper?
Ethics 101...
What is “better”? Yes is not my favorite band by a long stretch but I can’t say that there is a more important group in the history or progressive music. Maybe that is because their marketing was more savvy than most, maybe Atlantic pushed them to the top. Nevertheless they are seminal. Taking Anderson’s lyrics away from the music, out of context naturally makes them seem ridiculous. They are lyrics, not poetry. Some lyrics can stand as poetry but probably wouldn’t work all chopped up in a piece like “Close to the Edge”. Anderson’s lyrics and melodies are an integral part of what made Yes work. It is unclear whether you just unilaterally dislike lyrics in progressive rock or just have singled out the most “successful” bands. Is there an example of some lyrics that you prefer? That would give me some perspective  and turn me on to something I probably don’t know. Respectfully-TD

Well...whose opinion can I possible be expressing?

And sitting through it 15 times live sounds like a cry for fucking help. And a 15 years age difference only means you should know better.

Glad you liked Edinburgh. Moffat is pretty nondescript though. If it wasn't for their 'celebrated boilings' I doubt many people would know about it!

Mike you left out something important in your comment.

"It's shite" TO YOU!

You are certainly entitled to it, no question.

My opinion is quite the opposite, but take into mind, or not, that I saw and heard both albums live a total of oh 15 times live total.

Maybe it's due to the 15 year age difference?

Regardless as mentioned by another poster, the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same thing!

Oh by the way I really enjoyed my visit to Edinburgh! And visiting my family's ancestral home of Moffat as modest a village as it is.

Cheers!

It's shite.

Close to the Edge has its moments but they are few and far between. As for Tales I tried on the insistence of a friend (who was more likely a twat) to get into that album by playing it in the dark, while working, while doing nothing, while bathing, cooking, hoovering whatever. I must have played it through about eight or nine times. It truly is music with no redeeming features, not unlike Works or Humphrey Bogart's characters in Angels With Dirty Faces. If anyone can really point me out to any part of it that doesn't sound like animals in an abattoir then please do so.

Topographic Oceans is a masterpiece, in my opinion.

It's something (like water) to immerse yourself in (pardon the pun).

Sorry but it can'thelp to be introduced to the piece so many years after it's release.

Times and tastes have changed, but Close to the Edge and Tales are still fresh to my ears and many live experiences with both albums refreshes the feelings everytime.

My 2 cents worth,

Caffeine will not help in the attempt to enjoy Topographic Oceans. It will only frustrate you. Try the opposite end of the narcotic spectrum- barbiturates.

It doesn't matter if we are talking about the music, album cover art, lyrics or mullets. I can say that the Tarkus album cover art was complete crap. Someone else can say it was the best album cover ever. It would be awfully boring if everyone agreed on everything.

Speaking of boring... Topographic Oceans - I've tried many times to get into that album. I will try again, after a few Red Bulls.
