Thanx again Bruce,

I checked the headblock retention clips and discovered that one of them WAS making contact with the chassis.

The S/N ratio seems to be normal again.

Cheers,H

Hi Hessel-

I had a similar problem about a year ago.  Someone in our forum directed me to the solution (sorry, I forgot who, but thanks).  Turned out that my headblock was contacting the headblock channel because one of the headblock rollers was missing (Yes, I bought it that way, and I don't know how the previous owner could've lost it).  To fix it, I created a new roller out of nylon screws, and then got new rollers from Streetly.  But, anything that causes the headblock to short to the chassis in any way can cause extra noise.  Check the headblock retention clips and insulators under the headblock channel, and make sure they are centered & not worn out.  Maybe one of the retention clips is loose on top, and is rubbing on the chassis.  Check the headblock cable for shield integrity.  The 'tron is also famous for recieving RFI interference, so maybe a new appliance or computer in the house is causing the problem.  It could also be a noisy preamp transistor.

   Hope this helps.

M400 #126 seems to be having some strange quircks all of a sudden ; a while ago I mentioned on this list that the swell pedal was causing an increase of noise , randomly. As soon as I

disconnected the pedal it was fine. That issue was sorted back then . Now however, the noise is there all the time; I don’t think the headblock output is attenuated,as my gain settings are the same as ever, and I get the same overall level as always ,  just the noise floor  has gone up.Any ideas?

Cheers, Hessel
