"If there is one thing I hate about Moodies albums, it's the spoken word. Claptrap from start to finish. Discuss."
Of course you are, my bright little star... Yes, I know it's generally guff, but I'll stick up for the spoken interludes.
It's possibly a 'Midlands thing' involving all sorts of odd personal nostalgic reflexes..
I like the idea of these would-be cosmic Brummies (with their big 'tashes and their nifty dance moves)
-who all look like guests at my parents' wedding- getting the wrong end of the stick regarding Leary and the Astral Plane.
They may have been pretentious, they may have just suffered from the fact that Midlands English isn't necessarily thought of as an obvious accent of poetry and there's something inherently sensible
about the sound of thoughtful Brum.
Hang on a mo.. Every poem ever read to me sounded like that. It's the sound of HOME and probably the sound of Shakespeare.
(I may well be on shaky ground there, I'faith..)
Bless'em!
They were working it out for themselves and boldly went where no man could be arsed to go before.
I can't even SEE tarmac without the Moodies coming to mind. Come on, for all their naivety they did at least have a go. Wave a flag!
I don't actually mind the ropey bits that much as they always sounded like they were going for it. Which is probably more important sometimes.
Moustaches and all.
Whilst tripping.
Christ on a bike.
Love and Scones,
