Subject: Re: [newmellotrongroup] Not the M300a violins again!

Thanks Martin,

I am pretty sure that all the m300a violin samples available have not been taken from an M300. I may be wrong, and if so I would like to be corrected, but I think the original M-tron was sampled from a Mark II and the Streetly M300a are from a "see-through" M400, anything from Marcus would be master tapes so not much use to me. I am not sure about the Redtron se samples which to my ears sound the closest to an M300.

I don't suppose there is any chance of another Streetly pack with a sampled M300 on it? I am not sure if you own one, I know you have had them at Blithbury but I don't suppose another owner would be happy for you to sample one.

I'm too old to contemplate getting an M300.

Hope the collapse of the pound is helping you sell hundreds of mellotrons to the US.

Cheers

Mark

Hello Mark

It's all down to pre and line amp types, heads types and azimuth alignment, which tape work masters were used for copying, i.e. London tapes sounded very different from Streetly tapes or Sound Sales tapes. A lot of variables.

My best

Martin

Sorry to air my obsession with this tapeset again, I was watching this video of Hessel's:

There does seem to be something different about the sound of an M300 as opposed to an M400 playing the same tape set, but I can't put my finger on what it is although that has always bee n the mellotron sound I wanted. Unfortunately the sound of my M400 has always been a disappointment I suppose there is quite a big difference between a Mark II an M400 and a Chamberlin playing the 3 violins.

This link is to a little demo on my Soundcloud channel comparing the sound of my M400, the Streetly samples of the M300a from M-tron Pro and the M300a samples in Redtron SE. I am not going to buy an M300!

Mark

PS If anyone knows why the M300 sounds different I would really like to know.
