Bernie, I'd be happy to show you how I use compressors..someday:)

They are an essential tool for me! Could not do what I do without them. That being said , I have never compressed a tron. No need to, unless you using it for effect. I love what compressors do for individual tracks and full mixes. I have 2 compressors just for bass. 

After compressors, EQ is my next favorite tool. Only when I have EQ and compression solved for a track do I think about artificial ambience and fx.

I really don't understand the need for compressors in general. Other bass players have told me that a compressor is a must have for bass guitars, but I've never used one for bass because they seem to be nothing more than tools to cover up sloppy technique. I've tried compressors on my Mellotron and the only thing they do is introduce noise into the signal path. I think there must be a use for them simply because they exist in the professional recording world, but for the life of me, I can't figure out why.
