Bruce, my lines come in underground but they
come out of the ground and onto poles outside of the
neighborhood. In my old house I think it might have all been
grounded to the cold water line. Here, our house has a well
the supply comes in in plastic pipe and is pressurized under
the house. As I consider what you have told me I think back
to winter when we has the worst snow/ice storm in decades we
were without power for several days and parts of our area
were out for a week or more. Trees knocked out power lines
and downed poles all over the place and I don't recall
the problems being like that before then... I will call the
power company. Thanks for the tip!

Hey Frank and everybody- If
your power source is provided by underground
lines, definitely check your home grounds first. If you
have pole-provided power, have the power company check the
poles for ground line vandalism. Every few poles there is
a ground strap that provides either a neutral system ground,
or earth ground for lightning arrest. Copper
scavengers love to chop as much of the ground straps off of
the poles as they can reach. In the latter case, it is
possible that your home may have a neutral ground that,
because of missing local pole grounds, is miles away. The
long neutral then becomes an antenna. The power company
will gladly fix it.
Personally, I like lotsa
foil on the windows... ;)
