I used to love my DX7 (or rather, TX7, it took up a whole lot less
space & cost less) I got some great sounds on it. Had to use lots of
chorus, of course, but you could say the same about any of the crappy
1-osc polysynths from the early '80's
It always does my head in to see a bunch of people dissing progressive
rock on the MELLOTRON MAIL LIST, wtf. Maybe if I sign up to the TB303
list, it'll be full of people saying "acid house, pff, lame,
rollseyes.gif" and so on.
Prog's signal/noise ratio doesn't seem any less uneven than any other
subgenre of rock to me - better than some, worse than others. It
seems pretty moribund to me right now, and has seemed so for a good
few years now. My wife bought me a box set of 1930's Busby Berkeley
films on DVD for christmas, after listening to the tunes and
arrangements used in the routines on those, most or maybe even all
rock music sounds pretty small-scale, unimaginative, unabitious and
unexceptional by comparison.
