Static in mellotrons....

In some parts of the world there are still two pin wall sockets beingused. This system is where the neutral is also the ground. This is okayfor electrical safety BUT it does not drain static.

Martin's point here is very important. Additionally, the presence of athird 'earth' or 'ground' pin does not imply the circuit is groundedthrough anything other than bonding to the neutral conductors. Earthbonding to neutral is OK but relies heavily on the distance/resistance tothe point at which the neutral is grounded. I would beg to differ alittle bit though - I have come across neutral grounded system where theresistance between neutral/ground to real earth is high enough to behazardous.

Completely agree about this system not draining static and a good, realground/earth conductive path is essential to dissipate static.

For that you need a properground/earth wire from the main frame of the 'tron to a rod in the earth.Unless you have a true ground, problems will ensue. So the rule of thumbis to have a live, neutral AND earth.

Yep as above - and that earth should be as low a resistance as possible, which is not always the case where the neutral used for grounding goes toearth miles away from the installation.

Thanks Bruce and Fritz, I think it is probably static build up. TheMoneypit site is fascinating, almost makes me afraid to switch #1565on!

Good point, Fritz.

Another possibility is an intermittent ground loop through the trackselector switch.  Jerry Korb found a way to get rid of this. See Ken Leonard's Moneypit session here for a description:

Scroll down.  The fix is shown in the 3rd item of the "Korb'sMods" box.  Thanks Ken.
I hope this helps.

What's a tape zip? I think it's probably electrical, seems to be in thesignal out rather than an acoustic sound. Doesn't matter if I'm playingor not, just has to be turned on. Cannons in pomp and circumstance, nowthere's a thought.

Banging on the Mk V spring reverb is how I made the cannon sounds in'Pomp and Circumstance'. :-)
Could it be tape zip?  Sounds more likely.

You dont mean a spring boom do you ?  Anything with a reverbspring at volume can sound a lot like an explosion if shaken, kicked orotherwise disturbed.

What causes that sound  my tron makes from time to time? A shortclicking sound.   When reverbed it sounds like a smallexplosion, it seems to occur at random. I know it's not just my tron asI've heard it at the end of one of Woolly's recordings from theBBC.
