I have learned a lot in the last few days.  I have built up a few prototypes and am discovering a huge variety variance depending on the component selection.  it seems that capacitor and diode selection matters more than the choice of the transistor. This discovery has preamp implications for the Mellotron.

Now, in addition to guitar devices I am going to build a solid state Mellotron outboard preamp.  If anybody wants to sell me their accumulation of old caps, diodes and other parts box items I would be grateful.

I did a quick web search for germanium transistors for sale. Maybe one of the links on this page will be helpful:
