I’ll accept that as the gospel from the horse’s mouth as they say!

Thanks Martin and congratulations on the new sponsor!

Cheers,

Roger King, keyboard player with Steve Hackett is using Mtron Pro with Streetly Tapes plus the original samples from a MKII we lugged down to London for Genesis Revisited 1.

Cheers Gary.

Just listened to the entire stream. Very much the spirit of Genesis.

I normally don't approve of such things, but in this case I'm happy to make exception! Lol.

Check this out:

Well Andy it seems you were right.  It appears that Mellotron was used in a couple of songs but mostly it was “orchestral

instruments”.  It is strange that in only one song does he capitalize Mellotron.  In the other tune he says “mellotron screams”

which may refer to the generic “mellotron sound”.  In any case I owe you a beer! …

I just listened to Entangled…beautifully done and very true to the original…I can’t wait to get this!

Where's Martin? He'll know.

You can hear Entangled and the others here...

Just go along the bottom of the screen, you'll see it.

Hey Andy, I love the tron too!!  That doesn’t mean I would go out of my way to record with one with all of the modern

alternatives that are available .  I think a better statement might be that Steve likes the tron sound.  It would be interesting

to find out what he used on the albums.  I may well be a tron but I would be surprised if it was. How do we find out?

I can’t wait to hear Entangled.  I will get this CD this week if I can.

Cheers,

Gary

The thing is, Steve loves the tron!. I had a few issues with the first "revisited" but these sound amazing. Entangled sounds better than the original from what I've heard.

Entangled was one of my favorite Genesis tunes….I will have to get it!  I would be surprised if there were any tape based machines

used.  He used other samples in the first one but who knows.  Genesis (mainly Tony Banks) had enough problems touring with them

and in a couple of interviews he expressed a blatant dislike for the tron much like many of the early tron players did once they had an

alternative.  These days many of the alternatives are indistinguishable once sitting in a mix.  Even the original  trons were usually buried

in distortion, reverb, echo, phasers, etc. so the true sound of the machine was often obfuscated in the final mix.  It would be interesting to

find out for sure what the whole keyboard lineup was for both of his releases.  He may have gone old school but his first release sounded

pretty much like a modern production so I kind of doubt it.  If anyone knows what was actually used it would be interesting to hear.

Entangled on the new revisited sounds amazing. The outro sounds even better than atott IMO. There is definitely tron of some description happening, and Steve has more than made up some of the mixing injustices of the past. I wasn't a fan of the first revisited tbh, but this one is a step up IMO.

Genesis stopped using the Mellotron by the 80s.  I don’t think there is any Mellotron of any Hackett’s solo albums.

(I could be wrong but can’t find any documentation of it being used.  It is impossible to reliably tell the tape machines

from the “non-tape” machines once they are in a recording.  I see them more in the new young kid groups who are

also using vintage guitars and amps and in the small audience prog rock groups.  The guys that made the Mellotron

known have pretty much all replaced it with more modern keyboards.  Some still use the original authentic Mellotron

sound and other have regrettable (in some cases) moved away from that sound for good.  These days if you want

to hear real Mellotron then I think Mike’s tracks are the best examples of what you can creatively do with the machine

that exist.  Most other music you have heard for the last three decades or so is a sample or model of the Mellotron sound.

IMHO (don’t hurt for being pretty)J  You could probably ask on the Hackett forum and get more information about

it or maybe Martin knows more about it.  I have the “Watcher of the Skies Genesis Revisited” CD and it is quite good.

You never hears much guitar work in genesis that featured Hackett but when he steps forward in the mix he is one

outstanding guitar player!
