Straightforward? DP is pretty solid, AU implementation is stable, more pro than Logic and more composer friendly than ProTools.  I use DP more than any other DAW.   Ableton is probably a little quirky for you, if you're not good at learning new stuff..deep yet simple.  DP's editing is simpler  and more comprehensive than Ableton.  I do love Ableton LIVE though.  At some point if you decide to get into it, it'll ReWire into DP or ProTools.   ProTools only renders audio in REAL time.  Big, big drawback.  Digi says it sounds better, but I think that's plain 'ol crap. I can't hear the difference in any A/B comparisons I've done, and I've done them to shut up my ProTools using colleagues. ProTools is expensive too.

Don't discount Reason 6.5.  Great bang for the buck, outstanding sound quality and functionality, very easy to learn. No AU or VST implementation though.  Al;though I think they have a mellotron player now for their Reason Rack format?  Martin?

Subject: [newmellotrongroup] Mac - M-Tron Pro

I took the advice and have M-Tron Pro. The Streetly tapes are fab. I did not know that other sound samples were included as well. (The ARP Pro Soloist fuzz guitar - Nice!) I was surprised to find all of the presets and 'artist' presets.

I am now looking for a good, easy to learn Mac host app. A good sequencer / recorder / editor. I don't want to use any acid style loops. Products like Apple's Logic and Propellerhead's Reason seem to include loads of preset loops and phrases. I don't want any of that. Ableton? I'm not good at learning new stuff. Cubase? MOTU's Digital Performer? I think I could probably figure them out. Pro Tools just scares me for some reason.
