The Ellen D one is certainly Kehew's purple 400. I got to play it a couple of years ago after the debut for Mellodrama and Moodies at Isle of Wight was all over. I think there's photos of me noodling on it somewhere other than facebook. On Ellen D it's certainly the violins, which Pinder lightly complained about sounding pretty bad that night at the Egyptian.
The VH-1 live video doesn't look like any mellotron I know of with the vertical pieces of wood on each end and obvious gap underneath. But I'm pretty sure that's the flutes sound.
