Subject: Re: [newmellotrongroup] Orchestron

The Orchestron does have a much lower fidelity than the tape instruments: Mellotron, Chamberlin, Birotron, but some of the sounds have an interesting graininess to them.

You guys probably know the Orchestron strings and are not impressed, but some of the other lesser known discs like the flute and cello are pretty good. The low fidelity of the flute almost sounds like a breathiness.

On a model A Orchestron, you can change the speed of the motor (and the fidelity of the sound) and this turns out to be a big help.

I did the soundtrack to a movie a couple of years back, and the director and me decided that the Orchestron and Optigan would be less noticeable than the other instruments.
We were basically after trying creating 'electronic silences'. The Orchestron and the Optigan wound up being perfect.

The Orchestron is certainly not a replacement for a Mellotron but I never thought of the it like that. I always thought it could be used to underpin a Mellotron sound if you were going to have both on one track.

Yes, we had to. This has gone so way off of mellotrons. Let me get it back on track.... I'm sure my dog was hearing mellotron choirs as he passed!

Have you guys seen this yet?
