Sorry I didn't recognize the name of this.
If you're talking about the beginning and close of Threshold Of A Dream, yes it the sound and whine of the Mellotron MK II along with high strings played in various chords.
It's a very spacey sound. I think it would make a great choice as a new Mellotron sound
- you could have the whine and noise on each key with background high violins in the key that you are playing.
It would be an interesting experiment.

Hi all-
If I had to guess, Mike Pinder probably recorded the motor noise, then played it back at a different speed or half-speed. If a dynamic mic was used, it could've picked up all sorts of electronic noise from the motor, including the high-pitched whine. It would also make sense that the recording was a multitrack mixture of many sounds, including the low-level MK2 violins.
I wonder what the sound was supposed to represent. Someone waking up with ears ringing from an acid dream after a rock concert? A realization of self after the incident?
The high-pitched whine is much like the tinnitus I live with all the time.

I wish I had a MkII to try it with.
With some processing, I suppose it's possible. Way in the background, you can hear what to me sounds like MkII Violins.

Synthesizers.com group. It sounds like a combination of sounds to me. Anyone want to take a crack at it?
