Yeah, I think when talking about pretense, one has to consider the intention of the composer, as music, in itself, cannot really be pretentious. It can be academic, uninspired etc.  If one uses that argument, LVB really wouldn't be considered pretentious and certainly not JSB in my mind.  Now, U2 and REM, mentioned earlier, drip with pretense in comparison.  As much as I do like the early Yes stuff, they are a bit pretentious, especially knowing some of the members.  Here's another comparison, Phillip Glass is pretentious while Steve Reich is not.
