Subject: EQ'd Mellotron Tapes

Gentlemen,

For somebody like me who has never seen / heard "up close in person", a real Mellotron, Memotron, or the new Digital Mellotron, I really have no opinion (nor should I) on this topic.  But I would love to see and hear all 3 together side by side and play them, or better yet, seeing / hearing somebody them who really has some talent.  Realistically speaking, this will never happen.

This is the only example of EQing that I noticed on Streetly's site:

M400 Violins

Not so huge as the last one. Actually it's just like the Mk II Violins sound, just with its testicles removed in a horrible freak accident involving piano strings. In an attempt to sweeten the sound of the Mk II strings for use with the M400, the sound was entirely remixed to roll off the high end EQ and iron out some of the more raucous notes.

A much smoother (and, some say, less characteristic) sound than the classic string sound, it can be found on several mid-period Genesis compositions.

Question:

Is it inappropriate to put the MKII Violins tape on an M400 tape frame ?  I would imagine the answer is "no".

Which of these 2 violin tapes do you guys prefer ?

Thanks for responding...

Robert

Mike, examples of where the Streetly tape library mentions explicit improvements to the original sounds... (not that I'm saying these don't sound like improvements - but if purists are going to carp about any remastering of the M4000D sounds...)

Woah, Hang on there. The first two refer to earlier generation copies being found - not some weird re-hacking of the sounds to make them sound 'better'. They have better fidelity but are in themselves untouched.  That's totally different to the 'improvements' we were speaking about.
