The sound of a mellotron is the sound of reduced-bandwith wowed-and-fluttered non-linear-tape-distortion.
By using higher generation tapes than those which provided the classic sounds people heard on their favourite records,
there's definately a risk of reducing the 'character' of the sound.
However I should be clear that I'm not one of the people complaining about such things!
