John, you might want to try a control surface for additional VST control. Although I don’t like most of their stuff, the Behringer BCR2000 USB Midi Controller
is an inexpensive way to get a lot of MIDI control points and with the MIDI “learn” incorporated in many VSTs is very easy to set up.
