That reminds me of another. While recording at Scepter Wand, we stayed
at a Holiday Inn that the Turtles were also staying in. A doorman came
over to us and asked our band name because the Turtles wanted to know.
Later that evening, we went to the Rolling Stone where our underage
drummer got really drunk and painted the entire floor of the men's room.
Next morning, while looking out the window, we saw Volman and Kaylan
getting into a cab. Our drummer, wrapped in a sheet, leaned out the
window and started singing one of the Turtles' songs in a cracked voice.
Volman and Kaylan just looked up at him, while the rest of us shrunk
away from the window.
Next time we were in NY to record, we were parked in front of the studio
in a station wagon waiting for it to open. A limo drove by with a bunch
of hairy guys waving to us. The Turtles. Never did actually meet them
though.
