Why does the Mellotron turn into a work table in a studio?!?!?!

Actually, Bruce, Mellotrons were originally worktables. (Ask John Bradley)

One day someone at Streetly got bored and decided to put a keyboard underneath their worktable so he would be something to do when work got a bit slow. Suddenly Streely's management team (all Bradleys) realized the worker was on to Something Big. Taking the prototype down to the pub, they discovered it made a great bar table (room for lots of pints) AND it could be used for sing-a-longs like they used to have in Ye Olde Days. And viola! Mellotrons were born.

Mattias is just carrying this tradition on in a thoroughly Swedish fashion.

S'truth!
