I saw them once from central Illinois.
Lasted around 30 wonderful minutes.
Filaments of black in the oddly green light.
Quite a sight, especially from that far South.

When I was a kid, I remember looking north up the street in front of my house and seeing them way in the distance, but they were not in color. Only once did I see them in color. It was while returning home from a gig about 3am one Saturday (and simultaneously coming down off some nice acid). It was directly overhead; swirling red, green and blue that appeared to extend upward for miles. We pulled off the highway, got out of the van and stood there, staring at them until they disappeared.
