   Ahh, 78 RPM.  In George Martin's excellent eclectic book "All You Need is Ears", he wrote of the 78 RPM cutting system he first encountered at Abbey Road in the early 1950s.  Even at that time it used a dropping counterweight to drive the cutting turntable.  The weight system was quieter, had less wow, and was more reliable & accurate than electric motors of the time.  The master discs were coated with hot 100-degree wax, and the recording was not playable.  They had to wait for a record to be produced, usually a week or more delay.
 
  At least the system described below had immediate playback.  Not editable, but immediate.  Nice microphone, too!
