Subject: Re: [newmellotrongroup] Cats eating tapes! A Dog Story

This reminds me of a Doberman Pinscher I had that passed away two years ago. His name was Wolf. When he was a puppy he had a fascination with dirty laundry, especially my wife's undergarments and pantyhose. He would often raid the hamper or a laundry basket and abscond with his prize. Later we would find the object of his interest chewed up or just slobbered on and hidden behind a chair.

One day I was out in the yard with Wolf. He was about 8 months old at the time. I noticed that he was scooting his butt along the ground and I thought I noted some grass hanging out of his ass. Upon investigation, I discovered some sort of material. I went and fetched a towel, grasped the object and slowly removed it. It was an entire pair of black pantyhose. . He seemed to be greatly relieved and none the worse for wear, but I took him to the vet to be sure he was OK. That may have been the event that stopped that behavior.

Oddly, Wolf died at 10 1/2 years of age from torsion (also called bloat). Not from anything he ate or drank. We are mystified to this day because we are careful with our dog's feeding and exercise schedule.

Actually Rick, in the levity of the moment, I missed an opportunity to take your warning seriously.  You hear about ribbon, string and other long pieces of stuff that cats (& dogs) can ingest, but I've never heard about Mellotron tapes!  You may have wanted to kill 'em for eating your tapes, but (& I know you're of like mind!) the reality of "intestinal torsion," where a long, non-breakable object (Mellotron tape, for example) gets wound through the intestines, catching and soon twisting and cutting through them, is a serious surgical emergency, or an agonizingly painful death you wouldn't wish on anyone, let alone a beloved pet.  I'm VERY seriously glad your kitties were okay after that little episode!

With all the upcoming Christmas wrapppings an all in our near future, don't forget - ribbons are not toys, they're deadly! And BTW, for your pets, so are pointsettias & CHOCOLATE! Keep them all to yourself!!!  And have FUN, safe, Holidays!!!  Meow.
