Hey Nick-
Yeah, the 3A fuse should tell you something.  Sounds like it may have the original CM motor controller on it, and they don't allow the motor to come up to speed very fast anyway.  The SMS controllers come up to speed nearly instantly.
Here's some ways to help reduce the start-up surge.  Generally, reduce drag on all mechanical systems.  Make sure the capstan/flywheel and motor turn easily with the belt off.  Then, adjust the drive belt tension to allow about 1/2 inch of deflection, which is (from what I remember) normal.  A horizontally true motor helps, too.
   Good luck!

Thanks Bruce - I tried it today with a 5 amp fuse, and nothing popped, so I'm happy. At 240V, the motor is probably pulling about 500ma, and the pre-amp is 5/8 of damn all. What does concern me is the initial surge current when the motor speeds up to normal speed. I SHOULD know something about motors, but that was over 30 years ago - I learned it for the exam, then promptly forgot it! I'll try it tomorrow with a 3A and see what happens.
