The answer is......

when you put the JP-8 into dual mode you´re getting two 4 voice synths
instead of one 8 voice.

If you have the same sound assigned to both the upper and lower layers
you´ll hear two identical voices for each key you play. This will cause it
to sound twice as loud and fat.

This assumes that you have the balance knob at center position and your JP
is fully functioning.
