That sounds like the right process, although I think you want have the
Compu-Memory button pressed first, then hold down protection and press
write.

Another possibility is that your battery may have died. This happened
to mine a while back. If it has, you may want to remove the battery as
it can leak and (via the wiring harness) corrode traces on the PC
board. This happened to me anyway. I have no idea where one would find
a replacement battery though, maybe another list member might know.
