It's all about paring down. You can't and shouldn't take everything, but take
enough that gets you the sound you need. You can also make shortcuts. For
example, if you got some songs with repetitive basslines coming from a large
rack unit, and you have a sampler, just sample the basslines or other elements
from your songs (they're your own, so no legal problems :))
Also, you don't have to make the "live" versions of your music exactly the same
as the studio versions. Even stripped down arrangements work better.

It also might take some more gear to play with less. Recently I bought an Akai
MPC2000XL so that I don't have to lug my 60-pound Ensoniq ASR-10 sampler around
for gigs. The Akai is much smaller and weighs 20 lbs., now all I have to do is
convert some of my sounds.
