You sum it up in this sentence 'getting a lot of bang for the buck' ;-) The encoders are
what they are - not as good as many others, true, but they tend not to wear out
prematurely, i.e., become totoally unusuable.
Replacing the encoders would be an ambitious project - I don't recall anybody on this list
having posted an experience from having done so - mostly just cosmetic cap
replacements.
You could most likely acquire replacements from Mouser or EPR Electronics (probably
many others suppliers too but these are the two I've heard of often) once you've opened
the case and had a look at the specifications.
I use to be active on the ASR-X list, not so any more, and this subject came up _often_ and
many 'how to' tips and articles were posted along with a pictorial documenting the
procedure. I suspect it would be similar for the AN1x. Here are the links to those articles
