I never used an Audiophile 2496, but I did use or test each of the following on OS 9:
Opcode Studio 128x (it was mostly reliable - OS 9)
Opcode Studio 4 (very reliable - OS 9)
Opcode Translator Pro (the most reliable I used - OS 9)
Opcode USB MIDIport 2x2 (so, so - OS 9)
MIDIMAN USB MIDISport 2x2 (no better than the MIDIport)
MIDIMAN USB MIDISPport 1x1 (okaaaay under OS 9 & OS X)
Emagic MT4 (very reliable under both OS 9 and OS X.)
