the FM is a little worse than the Nord, but i figured between the Ion and
the Virus, i could compensate without having to keep the Nord around. the
Nord had (to me) a very ass-backwards UI and i couldn't get with it. the Ion
mod matrix _seems_ ok, but i need to get in there a little more to see how
bad or good it can be.

definitely not. there is a definite peculiarity to it once you start adding
it to a complex mix. it just doesn't seem to "sit" well at all.

i will have to try and pick up a filter or something for it then. that's a
good idea! the other synths are definitely a step above the Ion, true. but
the KS-rack in particular, i can't say enough good things about. it's about
the same price, maybe even cheaper, than the Ion, and about 4x as powerful.

you should pick up an AN200, they are ridiculously cheap on eBay!! i think i
paid 140 for mine, plus shipping. that's less than i paid for my EA-1, which
is about 1/8th as powerful. the AN200 is a beautiful instrument, provided
you can run the editor software. i am still dreaming that an OSX editor will
appear for it, but i am not holding my breath. the drones at yamaha didn't
sound very positive about it: "thank you sir, we will relay your comments to
the appropriate parties".
