First post, hi All =]
I'm 99% sure they're unbalanced. Alternatively, you could try both
balanced and unbalanced cables (you always should have some extra
laying around) and see if you hear any significant improvement.
I've cabled mine with unbalanced Hosa cables 20 feet long (not a
recommended practice!) and haven't had any problems so far. Just keep
your cables as short as practical and don't run them near things like
big power supplies, luminiscent lights, refrigerators, bug zappers,
arc welders, etc.. Avoid close proximity to power and speaker cables,
or at least cross them at a right angle. Unbalanced wiring is not
quite as bad or inferior to balanced as people tend to portray it.
Just follow those simple rules and you should be ok.
Also, a decent power conditioner (like a Furman PL8 or PL-PLUS) will
make quite a difference and is well worth it. Get one if you haven't
already and power all your audio gear from it (use power strips if
you need more plugs, put all wall-wart power supplies on a separate
strip and keep it away from everything else).
Cheers,
Alex
