Afaik those machines are more or less a computer, using a custom OS and
custom hardware, so i think it would be possible to transform it from a HD
recorder to a MIDI step sequencer, or an entire MIDI production environment
given the right custom OS software, so I don't think recording MIDI would be
a problem if the OS supported it. (Of course, the machine could be built in
an entirely different way, for instance one "black box" that controlls all
recording and hard disk operations, and a microprocessor that takes care of
sync, midi and sending controll signals such as "play channel 1-5 and record
on channel 6" to the black box. In that case, the microprocessor that gets
the MIDI wouldn't be able to send it to the black box to be written to disk,
but I would be really REALLY surprised if they had built the machine that
way...)
